Volume only matters when the sets are useful
Counting sets is convenient, but two sets can place very different demands on the muscle. Exercise selection, range of motion, repetitions, proximity to failure and technique all affect the stimulus. A hypertrophy programme aims to accumulate enough challenging work to drive adaptation without creating more fatigue than can be recovered from.

Keep movements long enough to see a trend
Planned exercise variation can be useful, but changing movements constantly makes progression harder to read. Keep productive exercises long enough to assess them. Swap one when it is unavailable, poorly tolerated or no longer fits the goal.

Use RPE to locate the set
Hypertrophy work generally needs challenging sets, but failure on every set is not required. Per-set RPE records how much effort the completed load and reps demanded. If a target repeatedly lands easier than intended, progression may be due. If it lands harder, preserving technique or reducing the next load may produce better work.
Progress without forcing linear jumps forever
Early progress may arrive as more repetitions with the same load. Later, small load increases, better execution or more work across the block can matter. Fit hypertrophy around the rest of life
Training frequency is useful only when it fits a repeatable week. Volume can be spread across more days to keep sessions manageable. Review more than soreness
- Are loads or repetitions rising on stable exercises?
- Does logged RPE match the effort the programme intended?
- Is technique stable across the final repetitions?
- Can the weekly volume be recovered from and repeated?
- Are exercise changes solving a real problem?
